May 11th to the 17th 2008

Tuesday      Day 2

The Richard Haldane Sangomore Hill Run

A run that is predominantly off the main roads and takes you out onto the lower slopes of the local hills

  • Start Durness Village Hall 10am

  • Finish Durness Village Hall

  • Distance 4 miles/5.5 miles

The route chosen uses much of the 5 km “Meadaidh Walk” which is described on a leaflet available from the Tourist Office. (Easy walking time - 1 ½-2 hrs). It also uses part of Walk No 3 “Beinn Ceannabeinne”  This takes you up towards the summit of Beinn Ceannabeinne and offers superb views. (4-5 hrs walking)

The running route:

Leaving the village hall or from the Presidents home in Durness we head for Durness via Sangomore. At Churchend we follow the track towards Loch Caladail, turn left and climb onto the moor which will take us to the edge of Loch Meadaidh. Veering left  we now follow the track for some 100 meters until we come to a ford over the the Alt Smoo Burn.

At this point there is an offer of routes back.

  • Option 1 The easy option. Do not cross the burn but follow the shale track  straight ahead. Beinn Ceannabeinne is the summit on the right.  The Alt Smoo burn is alongside on the right as you continue along the track to the end. Turn right onto the road and return to the village hall.

  • Option 2 You will see stepping stones at a fork in the path. Cross the burn and start an assent to wards Beinn Ceannabeinne. You are now on the ancient track used by the villagers to drive cattle from Durness up onto the hills and the summer pastures. When you reach a fork in the track, turn left downhill towards the Smoo Cave. From here there are wonderful views over the Kyle to Cape Wrath.  Follow the track to the main road, turn left and follow the road for about half a mile back to the hall.
