THE CAPE WRATH

CHALLENGES

A Totally Unique Experience

May 11th to the 17th 2008

Lying 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of Cape Wrath on the north coast, Durness is the most northwesterly inhabited area of Britain. A collection of scattered townships and farms, it has a diverse economy, but the mainstays are tourism, fish farming, sheep farming and crofting. Despite the disadvantages associated with the remoteness of its location, Durness is an economically robust and demographically well-balanced community of 150 households or about 350 people.

Durness is 74 miles from Dornoch and 103 miles from Inverness. The last 52 miles of both journeys are along single-track roads, which subsequently increase traveling time. Public transport is limited to the Post Office Mail bus and summer services from Inverness and Thurso.

Getting here by car or public transport provides few problems with huge investment in Highland roads in recent years, the journeying north from Inverness via Lairg and Laxford takes only just over two hours. The more spectacular journey by Ullapool adds on about another half an hour. Inverness is a major regional centre with direct bus, rail and air links to other Scottish cities and to London. which offers daily flights from the south.  Local rail services run north to Lairg where the postbus connects for the onward journey to Durness. A direct bus service from Inverness via Ullapool runs in the summer as does a service from Thurso along the north coast.

Car
From Inverness take the A9 north to the Tore roundabout. You may now choose the east coast or the west coast route to continue your journey.  The shortest route follows the A9 to its junction with the B9176 over Struie Hill to Bonar Bridge and then follows the A836 through Lairg. At a point about 2 miles north of Lairg you turn west on to the A838 and from there  you pass Loch Shin, the mountains of Ben Stack, Arkle and Foinaven, before reaching Laxford Bridge. Turn north once more and head for Durness.

The west coast route, . From Tore fopllows the A835 towards Garve and then on to Ullapool. Remain on the A835 until you reach Ledmore Junction. There you turn north on to the A837 driving via Scourie to Laxford Bridge and continue on the single track road to Durness.

Whichever route you choose, and there is a third way via Tongue, a warm welcome awaits you.
